An International Family

The Sovereign Order of Malta is a subject of international law and a lay religious order of the Catholic Church. Day-to-day, its broad spectrum of medical, social and humanitarian projects provide a constant support for forgotten or excluded members of society in 120 countries.

Its 13,500 members, 80,000 permanent volunteers and qualified staff of 25,000 professionals – most of whom are medical personnel and paramedics – form an efficient network that includes everything from hospital work, healthcare and emergency relief for people living through war or famine, to intervention in areas hit by natural disasters, general medical care and social services.

Founded in Jerusalem in the 11th century, the Order of Malta has a long history of service to the vulnerable and the sick.

The Sovereign Order of Malta has bilateral diplomatic relations with over 100 states and the European Union, and permanent observer status at the United Nations. It is neutral, impartial and apolitical.

Order of Malta CARAVAN – a meaningful and exciting “gap year”

CARAVAN offers the chance to spend time abroad and experience the joy of caring for the sick and the poor. During their time in Lebanon young people will not only work in homes for the mentally and physically disabled, but will also have the opportunity to study Middle Eastern Studies, a course consisting of Middle Eastern culture, religion and politics in one of Beirut’s best universities.

The young participants share a flat and live together as a community which is a unique experience. They enjoy deep friendships in community life and also deal with deep questions about their faith in spiritual retreats and meetings. They easily find friends among other young people from Germany, Lebanon and the international family of the Order of Malta. Beirut, an exciting city full of life, becomes their hometown for the next year.
