Every September a small gathering from the OMV embarks on a fun-filled weekend in the quiet Norfolk village of Little Walsingham. The weekend begins on the Saturday afternoon with an exciting activity organized in the local area of Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Past activities have included going to the Duxford air show, tenpin bowling in Norwich, a trip to Bonham Zoo and many more. Saturday evening is spent in the cottage and hostel part-owned by the OMV in Little Walsingham. There is always a delicious home-cooked supper to greet the group on arrival, and then the delights of the local pub, The Black Lion to follow. |
On the Sunday we are invited to join the Knights of Malta for Mass and a procession to the Catholic shrines and the sight of the ruin of Walsingham Abbey. The weekend ends with another splendid lunch for all those who took part in the procession
The Story of Walsingham
In 1061 the Lady of the Manor house in Little Walsingham had a vision of Our Lady in which she was told to build a replica of the house in Nazareth. She did, and this Shrine to Our Lady became a great place of pilgrimage in the thirteenth century, before being destroyed in the Reformation.
All that remains of the original place of pilgrimage today is a Slipper Chapel at the beginning of the Holy Mile, the approach to the original Shrine. The Slipper Chapel is the site of the current Catholic Shrine to Our Lady in the village, an Anglican Shrine also having been built in the village in the early 1920's.

More Information
The Walsingham weekend is a great opportunity for those who missed out on the Lourdes Pilgrimage to spend some time with old friends and our lovely HPs!
It’s much cheaper than Lourdes, this year only costing 65 pounds each for the whole weekend, including food and board! We also take a much smaller group than we do to Lourdes, usually around 50 pilgrims, 10 of who are HPs.
Finally, the weekend is very relaxed and much less structured than other OMV events, leaving more time for mingling, chatting and generally having a good time!
The weekend usually takes place on the third weekend of September. For more information please contact Kitty Acheson at walsingham@omv.org.uk.
